The House

Oakley Park

Oakley Park House is believed to have its origins dating back to approximately 1649, initially as the remains of a castle and potentially serving as the residence for the Oakley family. By the 1700s, the house underwent a name change, reverting to its former designation of Laurencetown. Around 1710, Mr. Joseph Williams is said to have been a resident, credited with constructing a new house in 1715. The Crawford family, occupants from 1730 to 1829, reinstated the name Oakley Park, implementing significant enhancements to the property. A realignment of the main road from Kells to Moynalty in 1815 provided additional space, leading to the development of parkland and a yard.

In 1837, Oakley Park House was only 744 acres. It was acquired by George Bomford for £15,000, leading to a substantial expansion that doubled its size. Concurrently, a walled garden measuring approximately 2.5 acres was constructed to the west. Acquired by the previous owners in 1955, Oakley Park House transitioned into a thriving thoroughbred breeding and training establishment in 1979, a successful venture maintained for over four decades. Notable racehorses bred at Oakley Park House include Justified and Big Matt, both achieving victories in numerous graded races in Ireland and the UK.
